To show completely the ships of the first rank (also called three-decade) of the end of XVIII century always were interesting to ship-modelists. With a crew of more than a thousand sailors, these ships carried 112 to 132 cannons on four or five decks. Like real floating fortresses, the three decks of this era will remain the largest wooden ships ever built. This monograph by Gérard Delacroix contains all the documentation required for the production of the Le Commerce de Marseille model. This ship was built in Toulon in 1788 according to the drawings of the ship’s master Sane. This talented engineer was the author of the drawings of a typical frigate, 74, 80 and 118 cannon ships. The ships built according to his drawings were the strength of the French Navy for several decades. The 34 large-format drawings (up to 90×170 cm) included in this voluminous work contain all the necessary information for the construction of even an admiralty model, if the shipmaker wants to make it. The set of drawings also gives the opportunity to modify the model slightly in order to build a possible version of the ship L’Orient, which sank during the Battle of the Nile in 1798. As before, detailed drawings of all things, spars and sails are given. Hide
